TVET CDAC Trains Equip Africa Tutors on CBET
Equip Africa Institute tutors are now steps ahead of their peers after undergoing a thorough training exercise on Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) which was facilitated by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Curriculum Development Assessment and Certification Council (CDACC) on 24th May 2019 at Equip Africa Institute, Thika. The focus of the capacity building exercise was on CBET implementation and assessment.
The training was led my Ms. Zipporah Njoroge (TVET CDACC) who emphasized on the need to bridge the skills gap that has continued to be experienced in the country. And the Government’s deliberate efforts to develop a skill-based economy, for example, through the Sessional Paper No.4 of 2016 which brings a paradigm shift to competency-based education and training (CBET).
The facilitators were quick to note TVET CDAC’s key role towards achieving Kenya’s Vision 2030 goals. They illustrated how the curricula developed for CBET would confer to industry standards by linking the curriculum to industry Occupational Standards (OS). The curricula development process is informed by market-driven skills, and is achieved through the collaboration between curriculum development experts and leading Sector-Specific Advisory Committees (SSACs) who are industry experts, and are also expected to facilitate the placement of trainees during industrial attachments and internships.
The role of tutors as a CBET facilitator was emphasized as they are key in developing and assessing the various competencies needed by the learners. Equip Africa Institute has to date invested in state-of-the-art learning and training facilities that give its graduates an edge over their peers in the market. This is a deliberate move by the Institute with the believe that utilization of well-trained tutors, empowered students, and ultra-modern learning and training facilities coupled with a rich industry linkage will ensure that Equip Africa graduates achieve the right attitudes, and competencies required in the market.
